BOTOX & Dermal Fillers

Since BOTOX® and dermal fillers have been introduced for cosmetics, other uses have been tested and developed. Included are several different dental specific conditions. Dentists, being specialists of the head and neck region, are beginning to offer BOTOX® and dermal fillers therapeutically.

BOTOX®

BOTOX® treatments are quick and seamless. It takes about 7-14 days to see the full effects of BOTOX® and can last 3-4 months

Gummy Smiles

If a large portion of your gums show when you smile, BOTOX® may be an option to correct this. With just ½-2 units, your smile can have a much better appearance and your gums will be better protected from dryness by the upper lip.

Grinding

Tooth grinding, or bruxism, can be a result of hyperactivity of the muscles that are responsible for chewing. This grinding can result in tension headaches (especially in the morning) and excessive tooth wear. BOTOX® can be injected into these muscles to decrease the forces on your jaw and help stop the grinding.

Migraines

Chronic migraines affect about 3.2 million Americans. BOTOX® can be strategically placed in areas of the head, neck and shoulders to help decrease the numbers of headaches and possible eliminate them. To be a candidate for this treatment, you need to have a history of 15 or more headaches in a month’s time and you will need to have the treatment 2-3 times over a period of 6-9 months.

Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers, such as Juvederm and Restylane, are used to correct volume lost in the lower portion of the face and the downward turn of the corners of the lips due to loss of teeth or severe tooth wear because of severe grinding. This can give the appearance of advanced aging and can also cause a fungal infection called angular cheilitis in the corners of the mouth. Dermal fillers are placed to bring volume back into the face and to correct the position of the corners of the lips and prevent angular cheilitis.

For various reasons, the gum tissue between the teeth (called interdental papilla) may be in an unfavorable position. This can cause the appearance of unattractive “black triangles” between the teeth. These areas can also be a food and bacteria trap because the function of the interdental papilla (to deflect food and debris from going between the teeth) is lost. Dermal fillers are used to plump these areas between the teeth and regain the function of the interdental papilla as well as to eliminate these unsightly “black triangles”.

The effects of dermal fillers last about 6-12 months.
